Abstract

Two aspects of single-reed instruments are presented : transitions between notes and the noise part of the sound due to the blowing of the musician. Measurements were made with the help of musicians and an artificial mouth enabling the study of the instrument behaviour and the observation of typical phenomena induced by transitions between notes, like frequency glissando together with loudness and brigthness decrease. Then a synthesis model adapted to real-time, allowing the reproduction of those effects was proposed. Moreover it appeared that the external pressure signal under the oscillations threshold was colored by the resonances of the instrument body as well as by a formant of the vocal tract of the musician. The use of a vocal tract model combined with the instrument model and the introduction of a filtered noise then led to a behaviour of the synthesis model close to the measurements.
